CDC advisors expected to recommend resuming use of one-dose Covid vaccine with an alert about rare blood clots
The CDC’s vaccine advisors meet Friday and are expected to recommend emergency use of the J&J vaccine resume, with a warning so that doctors can quickly recognize and treat the rare blood clots associated with the vaccine. Officials say only a small number of additional cases were identified during the two-week “pause.” European regulators ok’d resumption earlier this week after a similar review.
Pfizer and law enforcement agencies say they’ve caught fake Covid vaccines being sold in Mexico and other places.
Many nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals have left or are considering leaving their profession, attributed to burnout and other factors related to Covid-19. The exodus likely exacerbates what already was a healthcare workforce shortage.
While vaccines are over 85% protective against Covid-19, an unvaccinated person puts others at risk. One unvaccinated worker brought a variant Covid strain into a nursing facility in Kentucky, resulting in 46 new infections including three deaths. One death was a person who had been fully vaccinated. Nationwide, only about 1/3rd of skilled nursing facility staff have been vaccinated - many are refusing the shots.
Travel industry publication Skift reports that most hotels are keeping their extra surface cleaning protocols, even after revised CDC guidelines that say it’s OK to ditch the Lysol. Apparently, travelers find the “hygiene theater” reassuring.
