Nursing homes and other "congregate facilities" remain COVID's top target
The USA’s COVID-19 outbreak continues to get worse. It is not pausing for politics - or anything else. NIAID Director Tony Fauci says it will keep getting worse for the next several weeks. We have challenges ahead.
Here are a few headlines:
The number of deaths Wednesday hit a new high: 3,865 people succumbed to COVID-19. At the current pace, the USA is likely to pass the sad number of 400,000 deaths around the time of the next presidential inauguration, according to CDC models. More than 21 million Americans have been infected. Hospitalization numbers are also at their highest ever.
The more virulent strains are spreading in California and Florida, with 26 and 22 cases identified, respectively. Texas, Colorado and New York have also found several cases. Likely that many more are going undetected.
The FDA cleared three more COVID-19 test kits for use at home.
An analysis by the data trackers at The Atlantic finds that residents of long-term care facilities are overwhelmingly the most vulnerable to COVID-19 deaths — more than 1/3rd of all COVID-19 deaths even though they are only 5% of the total number of COVID-19 cases.
Rapid increases in COVID-19 cases in Arkansas during late summer were associated with fraternity and sorority parties.
A state of emergency has been declared in Tokyo after more than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in a single day, a sharp jump from previous days.
